Update: Flu Vaccine Recommendations in Egg-Allergic Patients

Because most inactivated influenza vaccines may contain traces of egg, previous protocols for flu vaccine administration in egg-allergic individuals included skin testing, split-dose administration, or 30-minute wait period after vaccination. However, after extensive studies confirmed that the injectable flu vaccine was safe in egg-allergic patients, the Adverse Reactions to Vaccines Practice Parameter was updated in 2013 to recommend that all children with an egg allergy of any severity can receive the influenza vaccine without any additional precautions beyond those recommended for any vaccine. This was most recently endorsed in the AAP recommendations for the 2017-2018 flu season.
